Why Therapy Intensives Work: Benefits for Faster, Deeper Healing

You have hit a roadblock in weekly therapy, you know that you need to overcome a particular emotional or mental barrier to really move forward, or you need relief more quickly and you think that an intensive could be for you. This is why more people are choose intensives as ways of healing deeply, more quickly.

Have you ever had that moment in therapy where right as you are getting to something good or on the verge of a breakthrough you have reached the end of the session? It can take half of the traditional 50-minute therapy session to really dive into what you want to explore. It can be so frustrating! By the next session you are trying to either get back to that point or something new is at the top of your mind.

That doesn’t happen in intensives. You get dedicated hours to go deep, get to the root of challenges, and fully explore The intensive sessions I conduct can be a short as 90-minute or as long as 3 hours and typically we are either meeting twice a week or 4 days in a row until the intensive is complete. I have seen multiple clients who want to transform trauma, shift the long-standing beliefs that impact their relationship and the way they connect to others, and experience true healing but week to week there is so much on their mind that by the time we clear it out in session we cannot get into those layers. With sessions that are closer together and longer we can clear out any recent things that are top of mind and then spend the rest of the session(s) getting into all of the things you can’t typically get into.

Many clients have shared that through intensives they have experienced more transformation, more healing, more relief, and more progress in 1 or 2 sessions than they have in months or years of individual sessions.

What does an intensive look like?

No two intensives are the same. They are customized to your schedule, your goals, and your needs. I specialize in EMDR Intensives and EMDR/ Somatic Therapy Intensives for individuals who need to heal from relational trauma, attachment trauma, and patterns of self-abandonment as well as PACT Therapy intensives for couples struggle with disconnection and loss of emotional intimacy. Here is what I have seen some intensives look like:

  • A client needs support in finding relief from a recent crisis or trauma. She chooses an EMDR intensive doing 2 90-minute sessions a week for 4 weeks in a row and after a month has a new level of internal safety and resourcing and is experiencing relaxation for the first time in a long time.

  • A couple has been going through a period of intense conflict. They are parents with busy schedules and they just cannot carve out an hour each week and scheduled a sitter. They choose a PACT Couples Therapy Intensive and do 3-hour long sessions over a weekend Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

  • An educator is on summer break and finally has the capacity to work through some deep emotional challenges that have been impacting her all school year long. She chooses to do a Somatic and EMDR Therapy Intensive doing 2 hours of therapy a day for a week Monday - Saturday to jumpstart her healing.

  • A couple has been stuck in a rut of increasing distance and lost emotional intimacy. They need support. They decided they are going to take every Saturday for one month to really work on themselves so they opt for a PACT Therapy intensive and each Saturday from 9 am - 12 noon they are working on them.
