What is Attachment Based Couples Therapy?
Attachment theory says that our attachment patterns start forming the moment that we are born and they form the blueprint or the hardwiring for how engage in close relationships for the rest of our lives. Attachment patterns are heavily influenced in our first 5 years of life but continue to be influenced by significant relationships throughout our lives.
Attachment-based couples therapy (ABCT) is a form of couples work that aims to help each member of the couple understand and improve their attachment patterns.
ABCT is based on the concept that early attachment experiences shape how we behave, respond, and show up in our adult relationships. For example, people who had secure attachments in childhood are more likely to be trusting, open, and communicative in their adult relationships. People who had insecure attachments in childhood are more likely to be anxious, avoidant, or controlling in their adult relationships.
In ABCT, the therapist works with the couple to develop new, more secure attachment patterns. This can lead to improved communication, increased intimacy, and a stronger relationship.
